NEW NJ LAW: RETAILERS NEED TO PREPARE FOR COMPLIANT PACKAGING
On November 4, 2020, the state of New Jersey passed a new law banning single-use plastic and paper bags in all stores and food service businesses. By March 2022, retailers will need to be compliant with the new law, which bans both plastic and paper single-use bags, as well as disposable food containers and cups made out of polystyrene foam.
The move toward more restrictions on retail packaging, particularly plastic packaging, is a growing trend. In total, nine states—California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, New York, Oregon and Vermont, and now New Jersey—have passed legislation banning single-use plastic bags. Retailers will continue to face pressure to reduce packaging waste, improve ease of recycling, and reduce carbon footprint. HOW TO ENSURE YOUR PACKAGING COMPLIES
With the effective date for the New Jersey ban only 18 months away, retailers should begin planning their new, compliant packaging programs right away. The process typically takes at least eight months: two months to work up artwork and approve samples and six months for production and shipping. Retailers wishing to show market leadership may want to demonstrate their care for the environment by moving even faster, expanding their new New Jersey shopping bag program to other states or reducing plastic consumption in their mail order business as well.
